Case-based learning

What is learning? with case based learning this seems so basic and what learning is. We learn from real world things and can learn for things that have happened in the past. We need to find some emotional or logical connection to the material. now that being said i think it is really hard to do this with every lesson I think would be overwhelming. I think that we can do this with a unit and give a case study for one or some of the concepts but we need to teach some parts of a unit with the understanding that it is the foundation of the information related to the cast study.
As an instructor we can create an emotional attachment for the students to show that there is a reason for the knowledge.

  1. I agree that it is difficult. In fact, I find myself saying that over and over in responses to others' blogs, my own blog, emails, etc. Time to get a grip! I would like to use case based learning more often but have to get my head around it first. I was just thinking of an alternate definition: authentic learning. Our kids need an authentic situation, or a real life tie-in, to bring meaning to what they are learning.

  2. I really like that you pointed out we can use this concepts in individuals unit or lesson plans. I think that is true of many of the different learning styles we have covered. With each new learning style/method it gives you another educational tool that you can use to teach your students.

  3. I think that sometimes we might not need to plan out an entire case/story, but rely on some of our own background experience and tell it in story form as it fits into our lesson plan. I imagine that it would also depend on what type of subject the teacher was teaching as well as what the objective for that lesson plan is.

  4. The times I am most bored in a classroom or meeting are the times I either don't see a connection to myself and what I am doing or because I don't see the point of what I am listening to. Helping our students make a connection to learning will help them be motivated learners. It can also help with classroom management as most students get in trouble when they are bored. Good post.

  5. case-based learning is just a tool like the other methods we have learned. But I think Schank would argue that content does not necessarily have to be learned before learning through case studies, but can be learned within case studies. There is no ultimate truth in learning theory, so you need to do that which works for your students and your content. But mixing in some case studies I think can make for an interesting class from a student's point of view, if nothing else.
